Within Exatouch, an item is an offering that a merchant provides to their customer. Your business’s list of items makes up your inventory and populates your menu.
- Note: As part of Exatouch’s comprehensive service offering, we provide a complimentary menu/inventory import service. When you get started with Exatouch, our in-house specialists will program your menu and import your inventory. If you choose not to use our import service, your inventory and menu will be blank and you’ll need to start adding items to your system. Additional items can be added after the import process is complete.
- From Home, tap Items.
- Select Items Details.
- Fill in item details. Required fields are indicated in blue.
- Choose Save.
These fields capture important information about your item.
- SKU: SKU numbers are barcodes. Barcodes can be entered using your barcode scanner or by manually typing the code into the field. SKU numbers are usually assigned by the manufacturer, but you can or generate your own custom SKU number by clicking.
- Note: Many items scanned into Exatouch are EAN13-compliant. EAN-13-compliant barcodes are 13 digits long and are also known as UPC-13 codes in the USA. Some items, such as international merchandise, do not have standard EAN13-compliant SKUs. Non-traditional items can still be added to inventory by first scanning the item, and then creating an additional locally-generated SKU.
- Alt SKU: Alternative barcode numbers are assigned to an item in the Alt SKU field. For example, you may want to apply an additional SKU to a holiday edition of an item.
- Short Description: This is the name of the item as it appears on your register’s tab and on your customer’s receipt. The short description also appears on your Items List and in reports. The contents of this field are visible to your client.
- Description: Enter a longer item description in this field. Content entered into the Description field is for internal use only and will not be seen by your clients. Use this field to record descriptive info for your staff, such as upsell tips or to point out allergen info.
- Category and SubCategory fields help you organize and keep track of your items.
- Note: If you do not select a category, your item will be assigned the default category:Â None.
- Retail Price: Enter a retail price of the item here. If this field is left blank, the item will be assigned the retail price of $0.
These fields are optional, but using these fields will help you track your items and inventory. You’ll also be able to set up restrictions and tax rules for your items.
- Size: This field is important when describing a matrix inventory item, such as clothing. Choose from default size options, or add additional size options. See:Â Add Size Options
- Color: This field is important when describing a matrix inventory item, such as clothing. Choose from default color options, or add additional color options. See:Â Add Color Options

- In Stock: Allows you to record the available quantity of a limited stock item.
- Stock Type options describe a condition for the sale of your stock item. For example, if the stock type is Regular inventory item, Exatouch will not allow the sale of the item when your inventory for that item is 0. There are several Stock Types available:
- Not an inventory item is the default setting in Exatouch. Not an inventory item is used if you are not tracking inventory for the item. For example, drop-ship items which are special ordered and not kept in stock are not an inventory item. Most restaurants do not consider their menu selections inventory items.
- Regular inventory item will limit the sale of the item once inventory reaches 0.
- Allow negative qty will allow the sale of the item if the inventory is 0. This option is useful when your stock exceeds your inventory total. Inventory can always be modified to reflect additional stock.
See:Â Modify Stock Type
- Tax: Chose one or more Tax Groups to apply taxes to an item.
- Multiple tax groups can be checked at the same time to apply multiple taxes to a single item. For example, both Group A and Group B are checked, both taxes within those groups are applied.
- Tax rates for each group are defined in Settings.
See:Â Set General Tax Rates, Set Per Unit Tax Rates, and Set Pre & Post Tax Rates
- Sold by Fraction: Select this option if your item will be sold by weight. If this item is selected, you must assign a Charge Rate for your item, such as $5.00 per lb.
- Visible on register: Most items are visible on the register by default. Some items may be ingredients or specials which you don’t need on the Register. Making an item invisible on the register will eliminate clutter from your register.
- 86: This field indicates that an item is out of stock.
- Note: All Items need to be linked to vendors. See: Link Items to Vendors
- Tip! Check your work to make sure your item was added correctly by navigating to the register and checking for newly added items. This is especially helpful if you are new to Exatouch.
- Tip! Practice adding items in Training Mode! Training mode is especially helpful if you are new to Exatouch or if you are training a new employee. Training Mode acts as a sandbox, allowing you to ‘play around’ in your system and add sample items without affecting your real-time data. See: Use Training Mode
