In states such as Michigan and California, customers who purchase beverages are charged a deposit for the bottle in addition to the retail price of the beverage. This deposit is known as a DRV (or sometimes CRV) fee, which is typically used for bottle deposit collection in retail. Customers can return the empty bottle for a refund of the deposit.
Creating a category is the recommended method for processing Bottle Deposits. This procedure ensures more precise Bottle Deposit reporting.
- From Home, navigate to Items > Categories.
- Tap New Category.
- In the Description field, enter Bottle Deposit or another similarly descriptive phrase.
- Tap Save.
Bottle Deposit settings are configured in the New DRV work area under Item Details. DRV (or CRV) fees are typically used for bottle deposit collection in retail.
- From Home, navigate to Items > Item Details.
- Under the Inventory tab, tap New DRV.
- Configure the following in the pop-up that displays:
- Description: Enter a description for the Bottle Deposit. Descriptions should be as detailed as possible. For example, enter 0.10 BTL DEP for a 10-cent Bottle Deposit.
- Note: We recommend incorporating asterisks or other symbols into the Description field when creating Bottle Deposits for EBT purposes. This helps to differentiate standard and EBT-based Bottle Deposits of the same value.
- Category: Select the Bottle Deposit category (or another category name you created) from the drop-down menu.
- Price $: Enter the deposit amount (e.g., 0.10).
- Refundable: Enable the slider.
- EBT Cash and EBT Food: Enable the slider(s) if the item is EBT eligible.
- Tax: Enable one or more tax settings by toggling the desired slider(s).
- Tap Save to save your work and close the pop-up.
- On the Item Details screen, tap Save.
Once you’ve defined Bottle Deposit settings, assign a Bottle Deposit “tag along” to the root item.
- From Home, navigate to Items > Item List.
- Select an item that will have a Tag Along assigned to it.
- On the Item Details screen, under the Inventory tab, tap the Tag Along magnifying glass.
- Select a specific Bottle Deposit item or enter keywords in the Search field.
- Bottle Deposit details populate in the Tag Along fields.
- Tap Save.
When items with bottle deposits are entered into the Register, the deposit value is automatically added to the customer’s order. For example, after selecting a single Budweiser Bottle ($4.00), a $0.10 bottle deposit fee is automatically added to the order.
Merchants and customers can view the added Bottle Deposit as a line item on the receipt, which is reflected in the Item Total and Total lines.
